Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

If you have both a medical insurance plan and a dental insurance plan, you may think at first that they operate the same way. But while both ask you to pay monthly premiums for coverage, medical insurance is constructed in a way to cover true emergency costs while dental insurance is more focused on preventive services like checkups. The theory with dental insurance is that if you get the care you need to avoid dental problems, you won’t need to pay for more expensive treatments later.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

A regular dental PPO usually follows a structure like this:

  • Essential preventive services such as checkups and cleanings are fully covered. X-rays generally fall under this category.
  • Minor restorative care like a tooth-colored filling receives coverage for as much as 80% of the cost.
  • Major restorative care like a denture or crown is usually 50% to 60% covered by insurance.

The details can vary based on the plan you have. For example, some insurance companies classify root canal therapy as a minor restorative process while others consider it a major one.
